Calendar 1.0.1 Can still RSVP to past events

Users without 'RSVP to any event permission' can still RSVP for the Event, and are still shown the RSVP sidebar block. Best just not to show the RSVP sidebar block/section at all if they do not have RSVP permissions.

Particularly a problem, since it means Unregistered / Unconfirmed users (if given View Events permission, as is likely) can provide RSVP responses.

A user can still RSVP (and edit prior RSVP) for an event in the past.
Once an event has reached it's start date, users should not be able to action RSVP's

Why do you think deactivated? Wouldn't it be best just to remove the RSVP sidebar block/section altogether? My thinking is if it's not useful, why even show it?

Because of "User Experience"... if something does not show up it will not be perceived the same as if something is displayed as "deactivated". When you see it as deactivated you recognize that this must have a cause, while if it is gone you do not realize it has been there. It would be even better if in the RSVP you would see a small note "You can not RSVP for past events".

"Cause and effect". Very important for user experience.
